Burlington vanquishes Oakville in shootout, 3-2 (2-1 SO)Sixteen Mile Sports Complex Fri, Feb 15, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Burlington Cougars defeated the Oakville Blades in a shootout 3-2 (2-1 SO). The two teams needed 10 turns to complete the shootout. Oakville got a shootout goal from Jonah Renouf. Burlington's other shootout goal was scored by Cooper Richards.The Cougars overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Burlington trailed 2-0 after a power play goal by the Blades' Patrick Chore at 21 seconds in the second period. The Cougars tied things up at 2-2 on a power play goal by Mark Rodgers at 13:30 in the third period. Burlington was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 20 penalty minutes. The Cougars had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just two goals on 10 chances. Burlington was helped by Tyler VanKleef, who racked up one goal. VanKleef scored on the power play 4:01 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Oakville. The Cougars earned a power play opportunity when Kris Bennet was put in the box for interference. Richards assisted on the tally. Burlington additionally got points from Rodgers, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, Burlington received assists from Mike Sones and Jeremy Gottzmann, who each chipped in one. Burlington was unable to stop Oakville from sending pucks towards the net, and the Blades eventually piled up 38 shots on goal. Oakville's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Blades finished with 26 penalty minutes. Greg Campbell also scored for Oakville. More assists for Oakville came via Nathan Renouf, Renouf, Stefan Leblanc, and Spencer Green, who contributed one a piece. Brock Novak made 36 saves for the Cougars on 38 shots. Oakville's Evan Buitenhuis stopped 26 shots out of the 28 that he faced. The Blades registered two goals on seven power play opportunities.
