Stouffville vanquishes Newmarket in shootout, 4-3 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Stouffville Spirit defeated the Newmarket Hurricanes in a shootout 4-3 (2-1 SO).

The two teams needed 12 turns to complete the shootout. Newmarket's shootout goal was scored by Justin Maiolino. Stouffville's other shootout goal was scored by Joseph Deveny.

The Spirit's penalty kill excelled, as Stouffville gave up one goal despite allowing nine power plays.

The Spirit were often in penalty trouble, totaling nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. Stouffville surpassed its season average of 18.0 penalty minutes per game.

The Spirit were helped by Justin Wain, who grabbed one goal. Wain scored 9:01 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Taylor Joseph assisted on the tally. Nathanael Halbert also scored for Stouffville. More assists for Stouffville came via Daryl Thompson, who had two and Sean Power and Robert Powers, who contributed one a piece.

The Hurricanes racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. Newmarket had been averaging 14.0 minutes in penalties per game. Stouffville was unable to stop the Hurricanes from sending pucks towards the net, and Newmarket eventually piled up 42 shots on goal.

The Hurricanes were helped by Thomas Beretta, who finished with one goal. Beretta scored 32 seconds into the second period to make the score 1-0 Newmarket. Daniel Leavens picked up the assist. Newmarket also got a goal from Elliott Burlon as well. In addition, Newmarket received assists from Travis Dermott, Jeff Murray, Brandon Francisco, Maiolino, and Ian Farrell, who each chipped in one.

Daniel Mannella rejected 39 shots on goal for the Spirit. Stouffville registered one goal on six power play opportunities. The Spirit ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Josh Carrick was ejected from the game. Newmarket's Lucas Peressini stopped 14 shots out of the 17 that he faced. For the Hurricanes, Farrell was ejected from the game.
