Whitby hangs on, beats Pickering 2-0Iroquois - Rink#1 Tue, Feb 12, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Whitby Fury took the lead against the Pickering Panthers in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 2-0 victory. A goal 15:57 into the the first period by Sam Gray proved to be the game winner, and powered Whitby to the victory Mike Panowyk picked up the assist.The Fury were sparked by Gray, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Whitby was often in penalty trouble, totaling six minors and one major for 17 minutes in penalty time. The Fury had been averaging 15.0 minutes in penalties per game. Whitby put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Pickering to score on any of its five power plays. The Fury's defense was surprisingly good. Whitby averages 2.9 goals allowed per game. The Panthers were unable to stop the Fury from sending pucks towards the net, and Whitby eventually piled up 47 shots on goal. Matt Davis also scored for Whitby. More assists for Whitby came via Chris Raguseo and Matt Eddy, who each chipped in one. Pickering did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Panthers average 2.6 goals per game. Josh Hickey rejected 18 shots on goal for the Fury. Whitby registered one goal on three power play opportunities. For the Fury, Sean Deroch was ejected from the game. Pickering's Conor Barrie stopped 45 shots out of the 47 that he faced. The Panthers ended with 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major. Pickering ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and John Woolsey was ejected from the game.
