Burlington shrugs off penalties, upends Mississauga, 2-1

The Burlington Cougars' penalty kill was superb, as Burlington survived multiple penalties to beat the Mississauga Chargers, 2-1.

The Cougars were sparked by Joe Sullivan, who racked up one goal. Sullivan scored 1:53 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Burlington. Adam Glynn picked up the assist.

The Burlington penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and one major for 49 minutes in penalty time. The Cougars had been averaging 23.0 minutes in penalties per game. Burlington excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in nine chances.

Steven Mueller also scored for Burlington. Other players who recorded assists for Burlington were Cooper Richards and Jeremy Gottzmann, who contributed one a piece.

Mississauga racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and three majors for 39 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 18.0 minutes per game the Chargers had been spending in the box. Mississauga put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Cougars to score on any of their six power plays. The Chargers' offense operated below they season average. Mississauga averages 3.5 goals per game.

The Chargers were led by Nicholas Palumbo, who scored the team's only goal. Palumbo scored 14:06 into the second period to make the score 1-1. B Beasley assisted on the tally.

Burlington's Alex Murray stopped 22 shots out of the 23 that he faced. The Cougars ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Alex Landry was ejected from the game. Austin Washkurak recorded 17 saves for Mississauga. Team's Nick Tetley, Nick Zottl, and Matt Donnelly were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
