Whitby beats Cobourg 4-3 after comeback scare

The Cobourg Cougars tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the Whitby Fury held on for a 4-3 victory.

Whitby made the score 4-1 on a goal by Nick Neal at 13:17 in the second period, and Cobourg got as close as 4-3 when Connor Armour scored 18:20 into the third period.

The the Fury penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 15.0 minutes per game Whitby had been spending in the box. The Fury made Cougars' netminders to work without much rest, launching 31 shots and forcing 27 saves. CJ Sharp made seven stops and Nathan Perry made 20.

Whitby was helped by Matt Davis, who finished with one goal. Davis scored short handed 18:09 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Whitby. A high sticking call on Marco Azzano put the Fury on the penalty kill. Whitby also got a goal from Henry Thompson as well. Other players who recorded assists for Whitby were Chris Raguseo, Matt Eddy, Jack Lewis, Taylor Best, Steven Deeg, and Austin Boulard, who each chipped in one.

The Cougars racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. Cobourg surpassed its season average of 13.0 penalty minutes per game. The Cougars forced Whitby's goaltenders to work all game long, getting 31 shots and forcing 28 saves. Josh Hickey made 15 stops and Tyler Feaver made 13.

Evan Jasper also scored for Cobourg. In addition, Cobourg received assists from Colbie Andrews, who had three and Jake Emilio, Theo Lewis, and Kenzie Smith, who contributed one a piece.

The Fury registered one goal on five power play opportunities. Team's Greg Milner and Kevin Stevens were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Cobourg registered one goal on five power play opportunities. For the Cougars, Corey Helliwell was ejected from the game.
