Whitby survives Stouffville comeback, wins 3-2

The Stouffville Spirit tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Whitby Fury would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 3-2.

A goal by Spencer MacCormack put Whitby up 3-1 in the third period, but Stouffville pulled to within one on Stefan vonEngelbrechten's tally 9:28 into the third period.

The Spirit's power play was ineffective against the Fury's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

The Whitby penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and one major for 17 minutes in penalty time. The Fury had been averaging 15.0 minutes in penalties per game. Whitby forced Stouffville goalie Daniel Mannella to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots.

Whitby also got a goal from Greg Milner as well. More assists for Whitby came via Chris Raguseo, Shaquille Hickey, Sam Gray, Taylor Best, and Tyler Feaver, who each chipped in one.

The Spirit were helped by Joseph Deveny, who registered one goal. Deveny scored on the power play 8:36 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Whitby. Stouffville earned a power play opportunity when Hickey was put in the box for cross checking. Josh Carrick provided the assist. In addition, Stouffville received assists from Matthew Dunlop and Mackenzie Wood, who contributed one a piece.

Feaver recorded 25 saves for the Fury. Whitby registered one goal on two power play opportunities. For the Fury, Kevin Stevens was ejected from the game. The Spirit's Mannella stopped 29 shots out of the 32 that he faced. Stouffville incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
