Newmarket vanquishes Whitby in shootout, 4-3 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Newmarket Hurricanes defeated the Whitby Fury in a shootout 4-3 (1-0 SO).

The two teams needed 14 turns to complete the shootout.

Newmarket forced Whitby goalie Tyler Feaver to work between the pipes, taking 41 shots.

The Hurricanes were led by Brandon Francisco, who finished with two goals. Francisco scored the first of his two goals at 7:35 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Daniel Leavens provided the assist. Francisco's next tally made the score 2-2 with 5:38 left in the second period. Sean Walker picked up the assist. Newmarket also got a goal from Alex Bontje as well. In addition, Newmarket received assists from Chris Chiste, Jeff Murray, Austin Rigney, and Matt LeMasurier, who contributed one a piece.

The Fury excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances.

Whitby was led by Jack Lewis, who tallied two goals. Lewis scored the first of his two goals short handed at 2:39 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Whitby. The Fury found themselves down a man on Sean Deroch's slashing. Matt Davis provided the assist. Lewis' next tally short handed made the score 2-1 Whitby with 6:19 left in the second period. Whitby had gained a power play chance when LeMasurier was whistled for boarding. Chris Raguseo assisted on the tally. Mike Panowyk also scored for Whitby. Other players who recorded assists for Whitby were Taylor Best, who had one.

Matthew Wintjes recorded 26 saves for Newmarket. The Hurricanes incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Tyler Feaver made 37 saves for the Fury on 40 shots. Whitby incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. For the Fury, Connor Laird was ejected from the game.
