Newmarket survives Kingston comeback, wins 2-1INVISTA Center Sun, Jan 20, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Kingston Voyageurs tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Newmarket Hurricanes would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 2-1. Newmarket took a 2-0 lead during the third period, only to have Kingston storm back on a Kris Grant goal 9:09 into the third period to pull to one goal down. The Voyageurs were stymied by the Hurricanes netminder Matthew Wintjes, who stopped 35 shots during the victory. Wintjes certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.21 entering the contest. Newmarket kept Kingston's goalie busy throughout the game, and Colin Dzijacky made 36 saves on 38 shots. The Hurricanes were helped by Calvin Higley, who grabbed one goal. Higley scored 2:26 into the third period to make the score Newmarket. Taylor Chick assisted on the tally. Newmarket also got a goal from Justin Maiolino as well. In addition, Newmarket received assists from Sean Walker, Brycin Morrison, and Daniel Leavens, who contributed one a piece. The Voyageurs put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Newmarket to score on any of its three power plays. Kingston's offense rang up 36 shots on the Hurricanes' net. Other players who recorded assists for Kingston were David Quesnele and Michael Casale, who each chipped in one. Newmarket incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors. The Hurricanes ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Walker was ejected from the game. The Voyageurs incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
