Burlington squeaks by Orangeville, 6-4

The Burlington Cougars gutted out a close 6-4 win against the Orangeville Flyers.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Mike Sones' goal in the second period proved to be the difference maker.

Burlington was sparked by Sones, who registered one goal and one assist. Sones scored 18:52 into the second period to make the score 5-4 Burlington. Tyler VanKleef picked up the assist.

In the losing effort, Orangeville was paced by Keegan Ackerland, who grabbed two goals and one assist. Ackerland scored the first of his two goals at 5:49 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Orangeville. Peter Stepanis assisted on the tally. Ackerland's next tally made the score 3-3 with 6:23 left in the second period. Joshua Decosta provided the assist.

The Cougars excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. Burlington forced the Flyers goalie Bo Bessette to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots. The Cougars' goal total was higher than their season average. Burlington averages 3.8 goals per game.

Burlington additionally got points from Gavin Shantz, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Adam Glynn, who also had one goal and one assist, and Shane Conacher, who also registered one goal and one assist. Steven Mueller also scored for Burlington. In addition, Burlington received assists from Joe Sullivan, Jack OHara, and Luke Sinclair, who contributed one a piece.

The Cougars were unable to stop Orangeville from sending pucks towards the net, and the Flyers eventually piled up 48 shots on goal.

Orangeville also got points from Stepanis, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Orangeville also got a goal from Colin Rigney as well. Other players who recorded assists for Orangeville were Kyle Thacker, Geoffrey Bagnall, Ian Nichols, and Jordan Carvalho, who each chipped in one.

Burlington's Alex Murray stopped 44 shots out of the 48 that he faced. The Cougars incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Bo Bessette made 28 saves for Orangeville on 34 shots. The Flyers incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
