Stouffville squeaks by Newmarket, 4-2Ray Twinney Rink 1 Sat, Dec 29, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Stouffville Spirit gutted out a close 4-2 win against the Newmarket Hurricanes. Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Joseph Deveny's goal in the second period proved to be the difference maker. Stouffville got the win with help from a great game by Deveny, who had two goals and one assist. Deveny scored the first of his two goals at 13:11 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Matthew Heffernan provided the assist. Deveny's next tally made the score 3-2 Stouffville with 3:43 left in the second period. The Spirit had gotten the advantage when Newmarket's Ian Farrell was sent off for unsportsmanlike conduct. Daryl Thompson picked up the assist. The Hurricanes were unable to stop Stouffville from sending pucks towards the net, and the Spirit eventually piled up 34 shots on goal. Stouffville could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 26 minutes in penalties during the game. Stouffville additionally got points from Thompson, who also registered one goal and one assist. Michael Morgan also scored for Stouffville. Other players who recorded assists for Stouffville were Matthew Dunlop, Dylan Savory, Taylor Joseph, and Robert Powers, who contributed one a piece. Newmarket's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Hurricanes finished with 60 penalty minutes. Newmarket was helped by Daniel Leavens, who racked up two goals. The Hurricanes ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Calvin Higley was ejected from the game.
