Whitby stifles Stouffville's comeback, gains 5-3 victoryStouffville Arena Thu, Dec 20, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Stouffville Spirit almost clawed their way back from a three-goal deficit, but the Whitby Fury managed to pull out a 5-3 win in the end. Whitby led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Fury's Jack Lewis' scored on the power play at 15:53 in the second period to put Whitby up 4-1. Spencer MacCormack had two goals and two assists to lead the Fury. MacCormack scored the first of his two goals at 12:10 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Whitby. Matt Davis picked up the assist. MacCormack's next tally made the score 5-3 Whitby with 30 seconds left in the third period. Greg Milner provided the assist. Whitby pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 22 penalty minutes. The Fury's offense rang up 36 shots on Stouffville's net. Whitby was held back by its power play unit, which tallied two goals on 10 chances. Whitby additionally got points from Shaquille Hickey, who also registered one goal and one assist. The Spirit racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 10 minors and two majors for 30 minutes in penalty time. Stouffville surpassed its season average of 15.0 penalty minutes per game. The Spirit kept the Fury's goalie busy throughout the game, and Tyler Feaver made 29 saves on 32 shots. Stouffville was led by Peyton Backus, who racked up two goals. Backus scored the first of his two goals at 11:15 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Stouffville. Backus' next tally made the score 4-3 Whitby with 5:22 left in the third period. Taylor Joseph picked up the assist. Daryl Thompson also scored for Stouffville. In addition, Stouffville received assists from Dylan Savory, Robert Powers, and Stefan vonEngelbrechten, who contributed one a piece. Team's Hickey and Tyler Park were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Daniel Mannella rejected 31 shots on goal for the Spirit. Stouffville registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. For the Spirit, Josh Carrick and Michael Stevens were ejected from the contest.
