Cobourg vanquishes Trenton in shootout, 4-3 (2-1 SO)Cobourg Community Centre Mon, Dec 17, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Cobourg Cougars defeated the Trenton Golden Hawks in a shootout 4-3 (2-1 SO). The shootout featured 12 attempts between both teams. Trenton's shootout goal was scored by Greg Trichilo. Cobourg also got a shootout goal from Conner Hogg.The Cougars overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Cobourg was down 3-2 after a goal by the Golden Hawks' Truman Landowski at 16:43 in the third period. The Cougars tied things up at 3-3 on a power play goal by Justin Danforth at 19:18 in the third period. Cobourg's penalty kill excelled, as the Cougars gave up zero goals despite allowing six power plays. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 40 seconds into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts. Cobourg was often in penalty trouble, totaling seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 13.0 minutes per game the Cougars had been spending in the box. Cobourg stifled Trenton's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Cougars were helped by Taylor Gauld, who finished with one goal. Gauld scored short handed 15:09 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Cobourg. Cobourg found itself down a man on Riley Robertson's hooking. Hogg also scored for Cobourg. In addition, Cobourg received assists from Cody Mintz, Dylan Goddard, and Evan Jasper, who contributed one a piece. The the Golden Hawks penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time. Trenton had been averaging 16.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Golden Hawks forced the Cougars goalie Nathan Perry to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots. Trenton also got a goal from Ryan Johnson as well. Other players who recorded assists for Trenton were Trichilo, Krystian Yorke, and Sammy Banga, who each chipped in one. Perry rejected 28 shots on goal for Cobourg. The Cougars registered two goals on six power play opportunities. Cobourg ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Corey Helliwell was ejected from the game. Victor Adamo recorded 25 saves for Trenton. For the Golden Hawks, Josh Timpano was ejected from the game.
