Trenton uses early goal to top Newmarket, 2-0

Greg Trichilo scored the go-ahead goal in the first period, and the Trenton Golden Hawks held off the challenges of the Newmarket Hurricanes in a tough 2-0 win.

A goal 17:33 into the the first period by Trichilo proved to be the game winner, and powered Trenton to the victory Sammy Banga provided the assist.

The Golden Hawks were boosted by Andrew Winsor, who turned in a shutout with 31 saves. The solid play of Winsor will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.21.

Trenton was led by Trichilo, who racked up one goal.

The Golden Hawks put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Newmarket to score on any of its five power plays. Trenton's defensive effort looked to be improved. The Golden Hawks average 2.4 goals allowed per game. The Hurricanes were unable to stop Trenton from sending pucks towards the net, and the Golden Hawks eventually piled up 33 shots on goal.

Trenton also got a goal from Jordan Minello as well. Other players who recorded assists for Trenton were Erlich Doerksen, Shawn Hulshof, and Nick Marinac, who each chipped in one.

Newmarket could not produce up to it normal offensive output. The Hurricanes put an average of 2.8 pucks into the net per game. Newmarket forced Trenton goalie Winsor to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots.

The Golden Hawks incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Matthew Wintjes recorded 31 saves for the Hurricanes. Newmarket incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
