Newmarket survives Cobourg comeback, wins 3-2Ray Twinney Rink 1 Thu, Dec 13, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Newmarket Hurricanes survived a determined comeback attempt by the Cobourg Cougars on the way to a 3-2 win. Newmarket took a 3-0 lead during the second period, only to have Cobourg storm back on a Kenzie Smith goal 17:26 into the third period to pull to one goal down. The Hurricanes put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Cougars to score on any of their four power plays. Cobourg was unable to stop Newmarket from sending pucks towards the net, and the Hurricanes eventually piled up 36 shots on goal. Newmarket was helped by Kyler Nixon, who registered one goal. Nixon scored 1:02 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Newmarket. Daniel Leavens provided the assist. Jordan Dunin also scored for Newmarket. More assists for Newmarket came via Brandon Francisco, who had two and Travis Dermott and Matthew Bernard (APJ), who each chipped in one. The Cougars' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Newmarket power plays. Cobourg's offense rang up 34 shots on the Hurricanes' net. Cobourg also got a goal from Conner Hogg as well. In addition, Cobourg received assists from Colbie Andrews and Justin Danforth, who contributed one a piece. Lucas Peressini recorded 32 saves for Newmarket. The Hurricanes incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. The Cougars' CJ Sharp stopped 33 shots out of the 36 that he faced.
