Newmarket beats Trenton 3-0 as Wintjes gains shutout

Matthew Wintjes was superb between the pipes for the Newmarket Hurricanes, as he did not allow a goal in a 3-0 victory over the Trenton Golden Hawks.

Newmarket was led by Calvin Higley, who had one goal. Higley scored on the power play 5:45 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Newmarket. Jordan Dunin picked up the assist.

The Hurricanes excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. Newmarket featured an improved defense during the game. The Hurricanes average 2.3 goals allowed per game.

Newmarket additionally got points from Brandon Francisco, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Newmarket also got a goal from Kyler Nixon as well. In addition, Newmarket received assists from Austin Rigney, who had one and Daniel Leavens, who had two.

Trenton's offense operated below it season average. The Golden Hawks average 3.9 goals per game. Newmarket was unable to stop Trenton from sending pucks towards the net, and the Golden Hawks eventually piled up 31 shots on goal. Trenton's penalty kill was ineffective, and let in two goals to the Hurricanes' power play unit.

Wintjes recorded 31 saves for Newmarket. The Hurricanes incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Victor Adamo made 25 saves for the Golden Hawks on 28 shots. Trenton ended with nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major. The Golden Hawks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Greg Trichilo was ejected from the game.
