Trenton beats Stouffville 4-3 after comeback scare

The Stouffville Spirit tried their best to erase a four-goal deficit, but the Trenton Golden Hawks would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 4-3.

Trenton made the score 4-0 on a goal by Erlich Doerksen at 37 seconds in the second period, and Stouffville got as close as 4-3 when Daryl Thompson scored 15:44 into the third period.

The Golden Hawks got the win behind a great game by Shawn Hulshof, who had two goals and one assist. Hulshof scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 2:26 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Trenton. Trenton had gotten the advantage when the Spirit's Robert Powers was sent off for abuse of officials. Dillon Warner provided the assist. Hulshof's next tally on the power play made the score 3-0 Trenton with 5:24 left in the first period. The Golden Hawks had taken the advantage when Stouffville's Nathanael Halbert got sent off for holding. Krystian Yorke assisted on the tally.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 7:52 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Trenton forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The Golden Hawks surpassed its season average of 15.0 penalty minutes per game. Trenton forced the Spirit goalie Braydon Banitsiotis to work between the pipes, taking 51 shots. The defensemen of the Golden Hawks were also effective in Stouffville's zone, and came away with two goals.

Alex Leader also scored for Trenton. More assists for Trenton came via Nick Marinac, Truman Landowski, and Ryan Johnson, who each chipped in one.

The the Spirit penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. Stouffville had been averaging 16.0 minutes in penalties per game.

The Spirit were helped by Mackenzie Wood, who racked up one goal. Wood scored on the power play 55 seconds into the third period to make the score 4-2 Trenton. Stouffville had gained a power play chance when Doerksen was whistled for roughing. Peyton Backus picked up the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Stouffville were Sean Power, Chad Burrows, Michael Morgan, and Matthew Dunlop, who contributed one a piece.

Andrew Winsor made 26 saves for Trenton on 29 shots. The Golden Hawks registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. For Trenton, Ori Abramson was ejected from the game. Banitsiotis recorded 47 saves for the Spirit. Stouffville registered two goals on six power play opportunities. The Spirit ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Corey DeRose was ejected from the game.
