Newmarket hangs on, beats Kingston 2-0

Brandon Francisco gave the Newmarket Hurricanes the lead in the first period, and the Kingston Voyageurs was never able to catch up in a close game that ended 2-0.

Newmarket took over the lead for good with a goal by Francisco at 11:54 in the first period. The Hurricanes had gained a power play chance when Brandon O'Neil was whistled for delay of game. Sean Walker picked up the assist.

Lucas Peressini spearheaded the defensive effort for Newmarket, as he did not allow a puck past him and made 26 saves for the shutout. Peressini managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 0.91 prior to the game.

The Hurricanes were led by Francisco, who racked up one goal and one assist.

Newmarket stifled Kingston's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Hurricanes was steadier on the defensive front than they have been for much of this season. Newmarket averages 2.1 goals allowed per game. The Hurricanes' offense rang up 37 shots on the Voyageurs' net.

Elliott Burlon also scored for Newmarket. In addition, Newmarket received assists from David Savery and Calvin Higley, who each chipped in one.

Kingston was held below its usual level of production. The Voyageurs put an average of 2.9 pucks into the net per game.

Newmarket incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. O'Neil rejected 35 shots on goal for Kingston. The Voyageurs incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
