Wellington vanquishes Newmarket in shootout, 2-1 (3-2 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Wellington Dukes defeated the Newmarket Hurricanes in a shootout 2-1 (3-2 SO).

The shootout lasted for 12 attempts between the teams. Newmarket's shootout goals were scored by Daniel Leavens and Brandon Francisco. Wellington also got shootout goals from Erick Delaurentis and Craig Campbell.

The Dukes overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Wellington trailed 1-0 after a goal by the Hurricanes' Calvin Higley at 6:02 in the first period. The Dukes tied things up at 1-1 on a goal by Campbell at 15:22 in the third period.

Wellington's Hayden Lavigne was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 41 saves and let only one puck past him. Lavigne certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.76 entering the contest.

Newmarket was unable to stop the Dukes from sending pucks towards the net, and Wellington eventually piled up 40 shots on goal.

Other players who recorded assists for Wellington were Parker Wood and Jan Kaminsky, who contributed one a piece.

The Hurricanes were held below their usual level of production. Newmarket averages 3.1 goals per game. The Hurricanes' offense rang up 42 shots on the Dukes' net.

More assists for Newmarket came via Francisco and Elliott Burlon, who each chipped in one.

Wellington incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. Matthew Wintjes made 38 saves for Newmarket on 39 shots. The Hurricanes incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
