Cobourg uses shootout to best Whitby, 4-3 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Cobourg Cougars defeated the Whitby Fury in a shootout 4-3 (1-0 SO).

The shootout lasted for five attempts between the teams.

Cobourg saw a three-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. The Cougars made the score 3-0 on a goal by Mitchell Burghardt at 12:18 in the second period. Whitby evened things up at 3-3 on a goal by Spencer MacCormack at 19:34 in the third period.

The Fury's power play was ineffective against Cobourg's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 9:21 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Cougars forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and two majors for 36 minutes in penalty time. Cobourg surpassed its season average of 15.0 penalty minutes per game.

The Cougars were helped by Colbie Andrews, who had one goal. Andrews scored 2:41 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Cobourg. Cody Mintz assisted on the tally. Cobourg additionally got points from Mintz, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Cobourg came via Dylan Goddard, Conor Carson, Connor Armour, Taylor Gauld, and Kenzie Smith, who each chipped in one.

Whitby was often in penalty trouble, totaling six minors and two majors for 22 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 14.0 minutes per game the Fury had been spending in the box. Cobourg was unable to stop Whitby from sending pucks towards the net, and the Fury eventually piled up 35 shots on goal.

Whitby was helped by Jack Lewis, who finished with one goal and one assist. Lewis scored on the power play 18:49 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Cobourg. The Fury earned a power play opportunity when Rylee McKinnon was put in the box for cross checking. Chris Raguseo picked up the assist. Whitby also got points from MacCormack, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Sean Deroch also scored for Whitby. In addition, Whitby received assists from Matt Davis, who had one.

The Cougars' Nathan Perry stopped 32 shots out of the 35 that he faced. Cobourg registered one goal on four power play opportunities. For the Cougars, Corey Helliwell and Smith were ejected from the contest. Whitby took out Josh Hickey after he had made 10 saves and installed Tyler Feaver in goal, where he finished with 11 saves and the sol. Team's Kevin Stevens and Marco Azzano were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
