Stouffville stifles Cobourg's comeback, gains 6-4 victory

The Stouffville Spirit came close to giving away a three-goal lead to the Cobourg Cougars, but did just enough to escape with a 6-4 victory.

Stouffville led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Spirit's Matthew Dunlop's scored at 10:54 in the third period to put Stouffville up 5-2.

The Spirit got the win behind a great game by Alex Botten, who had one goal and four assists. Botten scored 11:50 into the third period to make the score 6-4 Stouffville. Peyton Backus provided the assist.

Stouffville put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Cobourg to score on any of its five power plays. The Spirit surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Stouffville averages 3.1 goals per game. The Spirit got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Stouffville additionally got points from Dylan Savory, who also registered one goal and two assists and Robert Powers, who also had one goal and one assist. Mackenzie Wood also scored for Stouffville. In addition, Stouffville received assists from Sean Power, Michael Morgan, and Taylor Joseph, who each chipped in one.

Stouffville was unable to stop the Cougars from sending pucks towards the net, and Cobourg eventually piled up 39 shots on goal.

The Cougars were led by Evan Jasper, who racked up two goals. Jasper scored the first of his two goals at 18:45 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cobourg. Conner Hogg assisted on the tally. Jasper's next tally made the score 5-3 Stouffville with 8:56 left in the third period. Cobourg also got a goal from Justin Danforth as well. More assists for Cobourg came via Colbie Andrews, Dalton Bew, Connor Armour, and Kenzie Smith, who contributed one a piece.

Knick Dawe rejected 35 shots on goal for the Spirit. Stouffville incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Joe Keyser recorded 22 saves for Cobourg. The Cougars incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
