Newmarket wins tough contest against Whitby, 5-3

The Newmarket Hurricanes and the Whitby Fury were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Newmarket made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-3.

Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Elliott Burlon secured the win for the Hurricanes with a goal in the second period.

Calvin Higley was all over the ice for Newmarket, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Higley scored the first of his two goals at 16:40 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Newmarket. Chris Chiste picked up the assist. Higley's next tally made the score 5-3 Newmarket with 9:45 left in the third period. The Hurricanes earned a power play opportunity when Sam Gray was put in the box for interference. Chiste provided the assist.

Newmarket pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 16 penalty minutes.

Newmarket also got points from Brandon Francisco, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Jordan Dunin also scored for Newmarket. More assists for Newmarket came via Jeff Murray, Austin Rigney, Taylor Chick, Justin Maiolino, and Daniel Leavens, who contributed one a piece.

Whitby was helped by Taylor Best, who registered one goal. Best scored on the power play 6:28 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Newmarket. The Fury had gained a power play chance when Phil Kiss was whistled for high sticking. Matt Davis picked up the assist. Whitby also got a goal from Tyler Park as well. In addition, Whitby received assists from Chris Raguseo, Nick Neal, and Kevin Stevens, who each chipped in one.

Matthew Wintjes made 21 saves for the Hurricanes on 24 shots. Newmarket registered one goal on five power play opportunities. For the Hurricanes, Ian Farrell was ejected from the game. Whitby's Tyler Feaver stopped 20 shots out of the 25 that he faced. The Fury incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
