Mississauga vanquishes Burlington in shootout, 5-4 (2-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Mississauga Chargers defeated the Burlington Cougars in a shootout 5-4 (2-0 SO).

The shootout lasted for five attempts between the teams. Mississauga's other shootout goal was scored by Jimmy Cusan.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 19:16 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Chargers outdid their season average for goals scored. This season, Mississauga averages 2.7 goals per contest. The Chargers struggled on the penalty kill, allowing Burlington to score two power play goals on three chances.

Mississauga was helped by Lucas Venuto, who finished with one goal and one assist. Venuto scored 11:48 into the third period to make the score 4-4. Vince Figliomeni assisted on the tally. Mississauga additionally got points from Figliomeni, who also registered one goal and two assists. Mississauga also got a goal from A Latina as well. In addition, Mississauga received assists from Nicholas Palumbo, B Beasley, and Will Irons, who contributed one a piece.

The Cougars forced the Chargers goalie Austin Washkurak to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots. Burlington was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 21 penalty minutes.

The Cougars were led by Shane Conacher, who tallied one goal and one assist. Conacher scored on the power play 3:23 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Burlington. Burlington had taken the advantage when Mississauga's Latina got sent off for tripping. Mark Rodgers picked up the assist. John Najafi also scored for Burlington. Other players who recorded assists for Burlington were Tyler VanKleef, who had two and Joe Sullivan and Adam Glynn, who each chipped in one.

Washkurak recorded 28 saves for the Chargers. Mississauga totaled 19 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major and went 1-for-4 on the power play. For the Chargers, Matt Donnelly was ejected from the game. The Cougars' Brock Novak stopped 25 shots out of the 29 that he faced. Burlington ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Luke Sinclair was ejected from the game.
