Newmarket rips Stouffville, 5-0

The Stouffville Spirit had trouble finding ways to stop the Newmarket Hurricanes, which beat Spirit, 5-0.

Newmarket was led by Justin Maiolino, who registered one goal. Maiolino scored on the power play 11:56 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Newmarket. The Hurricanes had gained a power play chance when Jacob Bauchman was whistled for interference. Austin Rigney assisted on the tally.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 14:24 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Newmarket stifled Stouffville's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Hurricanes kept the Spirit's goalie busy throughout the game, and GianLuca Palmieri made 35 saves on 40 shots. Newmarket found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. The Hurricanes average 2.7 goals per game.

Newmarket additionally got points from Brandon Francisco, who also finished with two goals and two assists and Daniel Leavens, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Alex Bontje also scored for Newmarket. In addition, Newmarket received assists from Calvin Higley, who had three and David Savery, Sean Walker, and Taylor Chick, who contributed one a piece.

Stouffville's normally stingy defense allowed more goals than usual. The Spirit give up 2.5 goals per game.

Matthew Wintjes made 18 saves for Newmarket on 18 shots. The Hurricanes totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 2-for-6 on the power play. For Newmarket, Chris Chiste was ejected from the game. Stouffville totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major and went 0-for-5 on the power play. The Spirit ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Matthew Heffernan was ejected from the game.
