Columbus falls to Louisiana after surprising comeback

The Columbus Cottonmouths could not hold down the Louisiana IceGators, and IceGators erased a two-goal deficit en route to a 5-4 win.

Louisiana let multiple leads slip away before eventually digging out of a two hole to pick up the win. The IceGators took a 3-2 advantage on a goal by Josh Duplantis at 7:02 in the second period. Louisiana found itself down 2-0 after Columbus' Levi Lind put the puck home at 10:30 in the first period. After evening things up at 4-4 on a power play goal by Matt Gingera at 9:56 in the third, the IceGators got the game-winner from Jeremey Boyer at 16:54 in the third period.

Louisiana was paced by Boyer, who finished with one goal and one assist.

The IceGators were ineffective while on the power play, as they were held to two goals off of nine man advantages. The 33 shots that Louisiana put on net surpassed the IceGators' average of 25.2 shots per game this season.

Louisiana additionally got points from Shawn McNeil, who also grabbed one goal and two assists to lead the team in points and Matthew Robertson, who also had one goal and one assist. Troy Ofukany also scored for Louisiana. Other players who recorded assists for Louisiana were Tyler Lyon, Marc Andre Carre, Matt Miller, and Kirk Byczynski, who each chipped in one.

The Cottonmouths racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with nine minors and one major for 23 minutes in penalty time. Columbus had been averaging 20.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Cottonmouths' defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. Columbus is averaging 2.5 goals against for the season. The Cottonmouths relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Jordan Braid, Lind and Will Aide took 18 of the team's 35 shots.

Columbus also got points from Gingera, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Columbus also got a goal from Corey Bellamy as well. More assists for Columbus came via Kyle Johnson, Brett Hammond, Derek Pallardy, and Jason Yuel, who contributed one a piece.

Mike Dilorenzo recorded 31 saves for Louisiana. The IceGators ended with 35 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. For Louisiana, Jordan Foreman was ejected from the game. Columbus' Ian Vigier stopped 28 shots out of the 33 that he faced. The Cottonmouths registered one goal on five power play opportunities.
