Huntsville uses shootout to best Knoxville, 3-2 (2-1 SO)

Mike Gurtler scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Huntsville Havoc picked up the extra point in a 3-2 (2-1 SO) win over the Knoxville Ice Bears.

The two teams needed 14 turns to complete the shootout. Knoxville got a shootout goal from Mark Van Vliet. In addition to the clincher, Huntsville got a shootout goal from Ian Boots.

The Havoc saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. Huntsville made the score 2-0 on a power play goal by Anthony Battaglia at 13:18 in the second period. The Ice Bears evened things up at 2-2 on a power play goal by Emery Olauson at 9:16 in the third period.

The 29 shots that the Havoc put on net surpassed Huntsville's average of 21.4 shots per game this season.

The Havoc were helped by Justin Cseter, who registered one goal. Cseter scored 11:41 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Huntsville. Corey Fulton picked up the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Huntsville were Stuart Stefan and Aaron McGill, who each chipped in one.

Knoxville managed to stay out of the box better than usual, registering one minor for two minutes in penalty time. The Ice Bears ended up below its season average of 18.0 penalty minutes per game. Knoxville's offense was clicking better than usual and put 30 shots on goal during the game, better than the 26.6 shots per game it averages.

Van Vliet also scored for Knoxville. More assists for Knoxville came via Jeremy Klaver, Jon Higgins, and Dan Bremner, who contributed one a piece.

Jesse Kallechy recorded 28 saves for Huntsville. The Havoc incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. The Ice Bears' Bryan Hince stopped 26 shots out of the 28 that he faced. Knoxville registered one goal on two power play opportunities.
