Fayetteville uses shootout to best Pensacola, 4-3 (3-1 SO)

Anthony Bergin scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Fayetteville FireAntz picked up the extra point in a 4-3 (3-1 SO) win over the Pensacola Ice Flyers.

The shootout featured seven attempts between both teams. Pensacola got a shootout goal from Joe Caveney. Fayetteville's other shootout goals were scored by Ben Contini and Bergin.

The FireAntz were paced by Josh McQuade, who finished with one goal. McQuade scored 10:18 into the second period to make the score 2-2.

In a losing effort, the Ice Flyers were sparked by Caveney, who registered two goals. Caveney scored the first of his two goals at 3:09 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Justin MacDonald picked up the assist. Caveney's next tally made the score 2-1 Pensacola with 14:15 left in the second period. Dan Buccella provided the assist.

Fayetteville excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. By firing 41 shots on goal, the FireAntz exceeded the 28.2 shots they average per game this year.

Corey Toy also scored for Fayetteville. More assists for Fayetteville came via Brock Sawyer, Brett Liscomb, and Bergin, who each chipped in one.

Pensacola relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Ryan Salvis, Jordan Chong and Brandon Vossberg took 25 of the team's 48 shots.

Pensacola also got points from Buccella, who also racked up one goal and one assist.

Marco Emond rejected 45 shots on goal for Fayetteville. The FireAntz incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors. Gerry Festa recorded 37 saves for the Ice Flyers. Pensacola ended with 21 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major. For the Ice Flyers, Ron Cramer was ejected from the game.
