Columbus downs Mississippi Surge, 4-1

Jordan Braid had two points to lead the Columbus Cottonmouths to a 4-1 victory over Mississippi Surge.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 18:55 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Columbus penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and four majors for 52 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game the Cottonmouths had been spending in the box. Columbus excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. The Cottonmouths put 30 shots on net during the contest, more than the 21.9 they average per game.

Others who scored for Columbus included Kevin Kessler, who had one and Matt Gingera, who had two. Other players who recorded assists for Columbus were John Sullivan, who had three and Levi Lind, Derek Pallardy, and Sam Bowles, who contributed one a piece.

Mississippi Surge was often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and four majors for 46 minutes in penalty time. Mississippi Surge surpassed its season average of 22.0 penalty minutes per game. Mississippi Surge's offense was clicking better than usual and put 23 shots on goal during the game, better than the 19.6 shots per game it averages.

Mississippi Surge was led by Adam Stuart, who scored the team's only goal. Stuart scored 51 seconds into the third period to make the score 2-1 Columbus. Kyle Kudroch picked up the assist.

Columbus' Andrew Loewen stopped 22 shots out of the 23 that he faced. The Cottonmouths registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. Team's Will Aide and Daniel Amesbury were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Kiefer Smiley rejected 26 shots on goal for Mississippi Surge. Mississippi Surge ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Matt Ridley was ejected from the game.
