Louisiana vanquishes Augusta in shootout, 4-3 (2-0 SO)

Jeremey Boyer scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Louisiana IceGators picked up the extra point in a 4-3 (2-0 SO) win over the Augusta RiverHawks.

The shootout lasted for eight attempts between the teams. In addition to the clincher, Louisiana got a shootout goal from Boyer.

The IceGators saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. Louisiana made the score 3-1 on a goal by Kirk Byczynski at 4:29 in the second period. Augusta evened things up at 3-3 on a goal by Matt Auffrey at 18:21 in the third period.

The IceGators got the win thanks to a great game by Boyer, who had one goal and two assists. Boyer scored 3:54 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Louisiana. Jordan Foreman assisted on the tally.

The Louisiana penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled five minors and four majors for 30 minutes in penalty time. The IceGators had been averaging 20.0 minutes in penalties per game. Louisiana's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Augusta power plays. The IceGators relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Robert Short, Byczynski and Boyer took 17 of the team's 33 shots.

Louisiana was led by Boyer, who grabbed one goal and two assists. Louisiana additionally got points from Matthew Robertson, who also had one goal and one assist.

The RiverHawks forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up five minors and five majors for 45 minutes in penalty time. Augusta surpassed its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game. The RiverHawks stifled the IceGators' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Augusta's offense was clicking better than usual and put 30 shots on goal during the game, better than the 17.1 shots per game it averages.

The RiverHawks were helped by Alex Morton, who finished with one goal and one assist. Morton scored 14:16 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Louisiana. Luke Frey provided the assist. Augusta also got points from Auffrey, who also registered one goal and one assist. Casey Mignone also scored for Augusta. More assists for Augusta came via Drew Baker and Jason Price, who contributed one a piece.

Breton Lindoff recorded 27 saves for Louisiana. The IceGators registered zero goals on five power play opportunities. Augusta's Brandon Foote stopped 29 shots out of the 32 that he faced. The RiverHawks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Mignone was ejected from the game.
