Mississippi Surge holds on for 4-2 win against Columbus

The Columbus Cottonmouths tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but Mississippi Surge would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 4-2.

A goal by Adam Stuart put Mississippi Surge up 4-1 in the third period, but Columbus pulled to within two on Jason Yuel's tally 19:55 into the third period.

Mississippi Surge was paced by Branden Kosolofsky, who had one goal and one assist. Kosolofsky scored 16:10 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Mississippi Surge. Joe Harcharik picked up the assist.

Mississippi Surge forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up six minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 21.0 minutes per game Mississippi Surge had been spending in the box. With 25 shots on target during the contest, Mississippi Surge exceeded the 19.6 shots it averages per game this year.

Matt Gordon also scored for Mississippi Surge. More assists for Mississippi Surge came via Jeff Grant, who had two and Kyle Kudroch, Kyle VanderMale, and Nathan Oke, who contributed one a piece.

The the Cottonmouths penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. Columbus surpassed its season average of 20.0 penalty minutes per game. The Cottonmouths excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. The 28 shots that Columbus put on net surpassed the Cottonmouths' average of 22.6 shots per game this season.

Columbus also got points from Will Aide, who also registered one goal and one assist. In addition, Columbus received assists from Mark Thorburn, who had one and Derek Pallardy, who had two.

Kiefer Smiley made 26 saves for Mississippi Surge on 28 shots. For Mississippi Surge, Anthony Collins was ejected from the game. Columbus' Ian Vigier stopped 21 shots out of the 24 that he faced. The Cottonmouths registered one goal on five power play opportunities. Columbus ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Corey Bellamy was ejected from the game.
