Mississippi Surge blows out Pensacola, 4-1

Mississippi Surge had a three-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 4-1 win over the Pensacola Ice Flyers.

Mississippi Surge's Kiefer Smiley was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 28 saves and let only one puck past him. Smiley managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.72 prior to the game.

Mississippi Surge was led by Nathan Oke, who tallied one goal. Oke scored on the power play 19:08 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Mississippi Surge. Mississippi Surge had gotten the advantage when Pensacola's Brad Cooper was sent off for hooking. Joe Harcharik assisted on the tally.

Mississippi Surge put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Ice Flyers to score on any of their three power plays. The 24 shots that Mississippi Surge put on net surpassed Mississippi Surge's average of 18.8 shots per game this season. Mississippi Surge could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 20 minutes in penalties during the game.

Mississippi Surge also got points from Matt Gordon, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Adam Stuart, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Mississippi Surge also got a goal from Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn as well. In addition, Mississippi Surge received assists from Kyle Kudroch, Kyle VanderMale, Branden Kosolofsky, and Jeff Grant, who contributed one a piece.

By firing 29 shots on goal, Pensacola exceeded the 21.7 shots it averages per game this year.

The Ice Flyers were led by Ryan Raven, who dished out one assist.

Mississippi Surge registered one goal on two power play opportunities. Peter Skoggard recorded 20 saves for Pensacola. The Ice Flyers ended with 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors and two majors.
