Mississippi Surge survives Pensacola comeback, wins 3-2Mississippi Coast Coliseum Fri, Feb 22, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Pensacola Ice Flyers tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but Mississippi Surge held on for a 3-2 victory. Mississippi Surge made the score 3-0 on a goal by Kyle VanderMale at 4:48 in the second period, and Pensacola got as close as 3-2 when Ryan Salvis scored 15:15 into the third period. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 5:04 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts. The Mississippi Surge penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. Mississippi Surge had been averaging 21.0 minutes in penalties per game. Mississippi Surge excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. By firing 25 shots on goal, Mississippi Surge exceeded the 18.8 shots it averages per game this year. Mississippi Surge was helped by Matt Ridley, who racked up one goal. Ridley scored on the power play 19:38 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Mississippi Surge. Mississippi Surge had taken the advantage when the Ice Flyers' Ryan Marshall got sent off for tripping. Jeff Grant assisted on the tally. Mississippi Surge also got points from Grant, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Mississippi Surge were Shane Glover, Kyle Kudroch, Joe Harcharik, Branden Kosolofsky, and Nathan Oke, who each chipped in one. Pensacola racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. The Ice Flyers surpassed its season average of 20.0 penalty minutes per game. With 33 shots on target during the contest, Pensacola exceeded the 21.8 shots it averages per game this year. More assists for Pensacola came via Jordan Chong, Mike MacIntyre, Brent Clarke, and Ryan Raven, who contributed one a piece. Mississippi Surge's Kiefer Smiley stopped 31 shots out of the 33 that he faced. Mississippi Surge registered one goal on four power play opportunities. For Mississippi Surge, Kevin Hamel was ejected from the game. Gerry Festa took the loss and made nine saves before being replaced by Peter Skoggard who made 13 saves. The Ice Flyers ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Ron Cramer was ejected from the game.
