Augusta vanquishes Columbus in shootout, 2-1 (1-0 SO)

Matt Auffrey scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Augusta RiverHawks picked up the extra point in a 2-1 (1-0 SO) win over the Columbus Cottonmouths.

The shootout lasted for 10 attempts between the teams.

Augusta came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. The RiverHawks was down 1-0 after a goal by Columbus' Tom Maldonado at 16:02 in the first period. Augusta knotted things up at 1-1 on a power play goal by Alex Morton at 19:39 in the first period.

The RiverHawks' Robbie Moss was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 38 saves and let only one puck past him. The solid play of Moss will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.56.

Augusta was often in penalty trouble, totaling five minors and two majors for 30 minutes in penalty time. The RiverHawks surpassed its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game. Augusta put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Cottonmouths to score on any of their five power plays. The RiverHawks average 19.3 shots on goal per game, but only sent 15 pucks on net against Columbus.

The the Cottonmouths penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and two majors for 22 minutes in penalty time. Columbus had been averaging 19.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Cottonmouths forced Augusta goalie Moss to work between the pipes, taking 39 shots.

In addition, Columbus received assists from Matt Gingera, who had one.

The RiverHawks registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. Columbus' Andrew Loewen stopped 13 shots out of the 14 that he faced.
