Columbus boosted by Loewen's play in net, beats Huntsville 4-1Columbus Civic Center Sat, Feb 16, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
A stellar performance between the pipes by Andrew Loewen helped the Columbus Cottonmouths defeat the Huntsville Havoc, 4-1. Huntsville's power play was ineffective against Columbus' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded. The Cottonmouths were led by Tom Maldonado, who grabbed one goal. Maldonado scored 15:21 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Columbus. Derek Pallardy picked up the assist. Columbus racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 10 minors and four majors for 70 minutes in penalty time. The Cottonmouths surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. Columbus put 38 shots on net during the contest, more than the 21.7 it averages per game. Columbus also got a goal from Corey Bellamy as well. In addition, Columbus received assists from Jordan Braid and Mark Thorburn, who contributed one a piece. The Havoc forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 10 minors and four majors for 40 minutes in penalty time. Huntsville had been averaging 27.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Havoc put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Cottonmouths to score on any of their six power plays. Huntsville relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Kyle Laughlin, Nick Lazorko and Chapen LeBlond took 19 of the team's 35 shots. More assists for Huntsville came via Anthony Battaglia, who had one. Andrew Loewen made 34 saves for Columbus on 35 shots. For the Cottonmouths, Bellamy and Sam Bowles were ejected from the contest. Jesse Kallechy rejected 34 shots on goal for the Havoc.
