Loewen leads Columbus to shutout victory over Augusta

The Columbus Cottonmouths used a sparkling performance by Andrew Loewen to take down the Augusta RiverHawks, as the netminder did not allow a goal in Columbus' 3-0 shutout victory.

The Cottonmouths were paced by Matt Gingera, who racked up one goal. Gingera scored on the power play 9:06 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Columbus. Columbus had taken the advantage when Augusta's Drew Baker got sent off for slashing. Bret Tyler picked up the assist.

The Cottonmouths' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Augusta power plays. Columbus' defensive play was more effective than usual against the RiverHawks. The Cottonmouths gives up 2.5 goals on average per game. Columbus' offense was clicking better than usual and put 29 shots on goal during the game, better than the 22.4 shots per game it averages.

Columbus also got a goal from Marcel Alvarez as well. More assists for Columbus came via Mark Thorburn, who had two and Tom Maldonado, Jordan Braid, and Levi Lind, who each chipped in one.

Augusta's offense operated below it season average. The RiverHawks average 2.5 goals per game. Augusta put 25 shots on net during the contest, more than the 19.4 it averages per game.

The RiverHawks were led by Matt Auffrey, who took four shots.

Andrew Loewen made 25 saves for the Cottonmouths on 25 shots. Columbus incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Augusta's Nick Niedert stopped 26 shots out of the 29 that he faced. The RiverHawks incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
