Mississippi RiverKings falls to Columbus after surprising comeback

Undaunted by a two-goal deficit, the Columbus Cottonmouths battled back to claim a 4-3 victory over Mississippi RiverKings.

Columbus never led in the game until netting the game winner. The Cottonmouths fell behind 2-0 after a goal by Mississippi RiverKings' Adam Feniak at 12:32 in the first period. Columbus tied things up at 3-3 on a goal by Mark Thorburn at 6:23 in the third period. The Cottonmouths netted the game winner at 17:22 in the third period on a goal by Thorburn.

Columbus was led by Derek Pallardy, who finished with one goal.

The Cottonmouths relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Jordan Braid, Matt Gingera and Sam Bowles took 20 of the team's 39 shots.

Columbus also got points from Braid, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Columbus also got a goal from Tom Maldonado as well. In addition, Columbus received assists from Levi Lind and Marcel Alvarez, who each chipped in one.

The 37 shots that Mississippi RiverKings put on net surpassed Mississippi RiverKings' average of 17.5 shots per game this season.

Mississippi RiverKings was helped by Matt Whitehead, who had one goal. Whitehead scored on the power play 9:12 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Mississippi RiverKings. An interference penalty on Chris Bailer had put Mississippi RiverKings on the power play. Kyle Lundale picked up the assist. Mississippi RiverKings additionally got points from Kevin Willer, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Mississippi RiverKings were Matt Harrington, Chris Campanale, and Brian Yanovitch, who contributed one a piece.

Andrew Loewen made 34 saves for Columbus on 37 shots. The Cottonmouths totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 0-for-2 on the power play. David Wilson rejected 35 shots on goal for Mississippi RiverKings. Mississippi RiverKings totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 1-for-4 on the power play.
