Mississippi Surge uses shootout to best Pensacola, 3-2 (2-0 SO)

Joe Harcharik scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and Mississippi Surge picked up the extra point in a 3-2 (2-0 SO) win over the Pensacola Ice Flyers.

The shootout featured eight attempts between both teams. Mississippi Surge also got a shootout goal from Harcharik.

Mississippi Surge put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Pensacola to score on any of its five power plays. By firing 33 shots on goal, Mississippi Surge exceeded the 18.2 shots it averages per game this year.

Mississippi Surge was helped by Branden Kosolofsky, who tallied one goal. Kosolofsky scored short handed 6:38 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Mississippi Surge. Mississippi Surge played down a man on Andrew Harrison's cross checking. Kevin Hamel provided the assist. Mississippi Surge also got points from Hamel, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Mississippi Surge came via Adam Stuart, Jay Silvia, and Kiefer Smiley, who each chipped in one.

The Ice Flyers kept Mississippi Surge's goalie busy throughout the game, and Smiley made 33 saves on 35 shots.

Pensacola was helped by Steve Bergin, who grabbed one goal. Bergin scored 13:41 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Mississippi Surge. Ryan Salvis picked up the assist. Jordan Chong also scored for Pensacola. In addition, Pensacola received assists from Kevin Kozlowski, who had one.

Mississippi Surge totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 0-for-2 on the power play. The Ice Flyers' Gerry Festa stopped 30 shots out of the 32 that he faced. Pensacola ended with nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major.
