Columbus rides Loewen to victory over Pensacola, 4-1Pensacola Bay Center Thu, Jan 24, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Columbus Cottonmouths relied on the sparkling performance of Andrew Loewen in net to grab a 4-1 win against the Pensacola Ice Flyers. Columbus' Loewen was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 38 saves and let only one puck past him. The solid play of Loewen will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 1.92. The Cottonmouths stifled Pensacola's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Columbus was led by Sam Bowles, who tallied two goals. Bowles scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 11 seconds into the third period to make the score 2-0 Columbus. Kevin Kessler picked up the assist. Bowles' next tally on the power play made the score 4-1 Columbus with seven seconds left in the third period. Columbus also got points from Mark Thorburn, who also registered one goal and one assist. Columbus also got a goal from Brett Hammond as well. Other players who recorded assists for Columbus were Corey Bellamy and Tom Fitzpatrick, who contributed one a piece. The Ice Flyers did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Pensacola averages 3.1 goals per game. The Ice Flyers' offense rang up 39 shots on the Cottonmouths' net. Pensacola was led by Brad Cooper, who scored the team's only goal. Cooper scored 5:02 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Columbus. Columbus incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Gerry Festa recorded 17 saves for the Ice Flyers. Pensacola incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
