Fayetteville uses shootout to best Louisiana, 5-4 (1-0 SO)

Brian Elser scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Fayetteville FireAntz picked up the extra point in a 5-4 (1-0 SO) win over the Louisiana IceGators.

The two teams needed 10 turns to complete the shootout.

Josh McQuade and Elser provided the spark for Fayetteville, combining for four goals and one assist. McQuade had two goals and Elser also added two goals and one assist.

By firing 36 shots on goal, the FireAntz exceeded the 29.3 shots they average per game this year.

Fayetteville also got points from Elser, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points and Bobby Reed, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. In addition, Fayetteville received assists from Brock Sawyer, who had one and Kyle McNeil and Andrew Smale, who each chipped in two.

Louisiana relied heavily on its defensemen to assist its forwards, and the blueliners responded by scoring two goals on 17 shots. The IceGators' offense was clicking better than usual and put 35 shots on goal during the game, better than the 21.9 shots per game they average.

Louisiana was led by Matt Lawrance, who finished with two goals. Lawrance scored the first of his two goals at 9:24 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Louisiana. Greg Brown assisted on the tally. Lawrance's next tally made the score 4-4 with 10:08 left in the third period. Clark Byczynski provided the assist. Jeremey Boyer also scored for Louisiana. Other players who recorded assists for Louisiana were Shawn McNeil, Marc Andre Carre, Robert Short, and Jordan Foreman, who contributed one a piece.

Marco Emond rejected 31 shots on goal for Fayetteville. The FireAntz incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Riley Gill recorded 31 saves for the IceGators. Louisiana incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
