Thorburn's big game bests Augusta in 4-1 Columbus winColumbus Civic Center Tue, Jan 15, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
Mark Thorburn had two goals and one assist to lead the Columbus Cottonmouths to a 4-1 victory over the Augusta RiverHawks. Thorburn found the back of the net 17:06 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Columbus and again while on the power play 7:10 into the third to make the score 4-1 Columbus.Columbus was led by goalie Ian Vigier, who finished with 28 saves while allowing one goal. Vigier managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.74 prior to the game. The Cottonmouths stifled Augusta's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. With 28 shots on target during the contest, Columbus exceeded the 23.0 shots it averages per game this year. Columbus also got a goal from Alex MacLeod as well. In addition, Columbus received assists from Sam Bowles, who had one and Bret Tyler, who had three. The RiverHawks put 29 shots on net during the contest, more than the 19.8 they average per game. Augusta's penalty kill unit could not stop the Cottonmouths' power play, which converted on two of three opportunities. The RiverHawks were led by Shawn Skelly, who scored the team's only goal. Skelly scored 10:07 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Alex Morton assisted on the tally. Columbus ended with 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major. Austin Lee recorded 24 saves for Augusta. The RiverHawks totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 0-for-4 on the power play.
