Columbus boosted by Loewen's play in net, beats Knoxville 4-1Knoxville Civic Coliseum Sat, Jan 12, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Columbus Cottonmouths relied on the sparkling performance of Andrew Loewen in net to grab a 4-1 win against the Knoxville Ice Bears. Jordan Braid had one goal and two assists to lead Columbus. Braid scored on the power play 11:42 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Columbus. A roughing penalty on Nate Peterson had put the Cottonmouths on the power play. Matt Gingera assisted on the tally. The Columbus penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled four minors and three majors for 23 minutes in penalty time. The Cottonmouths surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. Columbus stifled Knoxville's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Columbus also got a goal from John Sullivan as well. Other players who recorded assists for Columbus were Mark Thorburn, Brett Hammond, Levi Lind, and Derek Pallardy, who contributed one a piece. The Ice Bears racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with three minors and five majors for 31 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game Knoxville had been spending in the box. The Ice Bears did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Knoxville averages 3.1 goals per game. The Ice Bears relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Matt Pierce, Jon Higgins and Tyler Fernandez took 20 of the team's 37 shots. In addition, Knoxville received assists from Eric Satim, who had one. Loewen recorded 36 saves for the Cottonmouths. Columbus registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Peter Skoggard made 22 saves for Knoxville on 26 shots. The Ice Bears registered zero goals on three power play opportunities.
