Augusta survives Columbus comeback, wins 5-4

The Augusta RiverHawks survived a determined comeback attempt by the Columbus Cottonmouths on the way to a 5-4 win.

Augusta took a 4-2 lead during the second period, only to have Columbus storm back on a Derek Pallardy goal 1:23 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The 29 shots that the RiverHawks put on net surpassed Augusta's average of 24.4 shots per game this season. The RiverHawks bested their season scoring average. This season, Augusta averages 2.5 goals per contest. The RiverHawks was effective with a man advantage, and put in two goals while on the power play.

Augusta was helped by Chad Ziegler, who grabbed one goal. Ziegler scored 19:48 into the third period to make the score 5-4 Augusta. Matt Auffrey assisted on the tally. Augusta additionally got points from Dennis Sicard, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Shawn Skelly, who also tallied one goal and two assists. Augusta also got a goal from Taylor McReynolds as well. More assists for Augusta came via Jason Price, who had two and Casey Mignone and Jesse Echternach, who each chipped in one.

The Cottonmouths relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Sam Bowles, Jordan Braid and John Sullivan took 17 of the team's 32 shots.

Columbus also got points from Bowles, who also registered one goal and one assist. Matt Gingera also scored for Columbus. Other players who recorded assists for Columbus were Tom Maldonado and Mark Thorburn, who contributed one a piece.

Austin Lee rejected 28 shots on goal for the RiverHawks. Augusta ended with 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major. Ian Vigier recorded 24 saves for Columbus. The Cottonmouths totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 1-for-3 on the power play.
