Mississippi RiverKings holds on for 5-4 win against Fayetteville

The Fayetteville FireAntz tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but Mississippi RiverKings would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4.

Mississippi RiverKings took a 4-1 lead during the second period, only to have Fayetteville storm back on a Josh McQuade goal 32 seconds into the third period to pull to one goal down.

Mike MacDonald had a great game for Mississippi RiverKings, netting two goals. MacDonald found the back of the net on the power play 4:14 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Mississippi RiverKings and again while 7:21 into the third to make the score 5-3 Mississippi RiverKings.

Mississippi RiverKings stifled the FireAntz's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Mississippi RiverKings surpassed its usual scoring output this season. This season, Mississippi RiverKings averages 2.9 goals per contest.

Mississippi RiverKings also got points from Todd Hosmer, who also had two goals and one assist. Patrick Gaul also scored for Mississippi RiverKings. In addition, Mississippi RiverKings received assists from Matt Whitehead, who had three and Mike Baran, Steven Kaunisto, Jeremy Dawes, and Matt Harrington, who contributed one a piece.

Penalties took their toll on Fayetteville, as its penalty kill unit let in two power play goals. The FireAntz's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. Fayetteville gives up 2.5 goals per game. The FireAntz put 43 shots on net during the contest, more than the 32.4 they average per game.

Fayetteville was helped by Brandon Richardson, who tallied two goals. Richardson scored the first of his two goals at 3:11 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Mississippi RiverKings. Andrew Smale assisted on the tally. Richardson's next tally made the score 5-4 Mississippi RiverKings with 5:03 left in the third period. Bobby Reed provided the assist. Fayetteville additionally got points from McQuade, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Fayetteville also got a goal from Derek Elliott as well. More assists for Fayetteville came via Mike Kavanagh and John Clewlow, who each chipped in one.

Matthew Krahn recorded 39 saves for Mississippi RiverKings. Mississippi RiverKings incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. The FireAntz's Marco Emond stopped 22 shots out of the 27 that he faced. Fayetteville incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
