Louisiana holds on for 4-3 win against Mississippi SurgeCajundome Sun, Dec 23, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Louisiana IceGators survived a determined comeback attempt by Mississippi Surge on the way to a 4-3 win. A goal by Shawn McNeil put Louisiana up 3-0 in the second period, but Mississippi Surge pulled to within one on Tommy Lange's tally 12:35 into the third period. Denny Kearney had two goals and one assist to lead the IceGators. Kearney scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 4:59 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Louisiana. Louisiana earned a power play opportunity when Dan Clark was put in the box for delay of game. Matthew Robertson provided the assist. Kearney's next tally on the power play made the score 4-2 Louisiana with 3:31 left in the third period. The IceGators had gotten the advantage when Mississippi Surge's Kyle Kudroch was sent off for high sticking. Robertson picked up the assist. Louisiana put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Mississippi Surge to score on any of its three power plays. The IceGators were below their usual level of shot production, taking 17 shots compared to the 25.1 Louisiana averages. The defense for the IceGators played an important role offensively, racking up eight shots on goal. Louisiana also got points from Robert Short, who also racked up one goal and three assists. By firing 31 shots on goal, Mississippi Surge exceeded the 25.9 shots it averages per game this year. Mississippi Surge also got a goal from Jeff Grant as well. In addition, Mississippi Surge received assists from Corey Tamblyn, who had two and Adam Stuart and Branden Kosolofsky, who each chipped in one. Riley Gill made 28 saves for Louisiana on 31 shots. The IceGators totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 3-for-7 on the power play. Mississippi Surge's Clark stopped 13 shots out of the 17 that he faced. Mississippi Surge ended with 19 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major.
