Emond leads Fayetteville to shutout victory over Pensacola

Marco Emond made 37 saves to complete the shutout and led the Fayetteville FireAntz to a 5-0 win against the Pensacola Ice Flyers.

Pensacola's power play was ineffective against Fayetteville's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The FireAntz racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. Fayetteville surpassed its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game. The FireAntz put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Ice Flyers to score on any of their seven power plays. Fayetteville featured an improved defense during the game. The FireAntz allow 2.4 goals per game.

Fayetteville was helped by Mike Gurtler, who finished with one goal. Gurtler scored 7:44 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Fayetteville. Tristin Llewellyn provided the assist. Fayetteville also got points from Brandon Richardson, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Fayetteville included Andrew Smale, who had one and Brian Elser, who had two. In addition, Fayetteville received assists from Brock Sawyer and Derek Elliott, who each chipped in one and Mike Kavanagh and Josh McQuade, who contributed two a piece.

Pensacola's offense operated below it season average. The Ice Flyers put an average of 2.9 pucks into the net per game. Pensacola's penalty kill unit could not stop the FireAntz's power play, which converted on two of three opportunities. The Ice Flyers' defense was uncharacteristically lax during the game. Pensacola averages 2.5 goals allowed per game. The Ice Flyers forced Fayetteville goalie Emond to work between the pipes, taking 37 shots.

Pensacola was led by Jordan Chong, who took five shots.

The FireAntz ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Kavanagh was ejected from the game. Steve Christie rejected 22 shots on goal for the Ice Flyers. Pensacola ended with 33 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major. Team's Gabriel Boutin-Gagnon and Tyler Miller were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
