Sullivan leads Columbus over Huntsville, 5-1

Columbus Civic Center    Sun, Dec 16, 2012

John Sullivan was all over the ice for the Columbus Cottonmouths, as he tallied two goals and one assist in Columbus' 5-1 win over the Huntsville Havoc.

Sullivan's tallies came at 6:43 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Columbus and on the power play 13:00 into the first to make the score 2-0 Columbus.

Huntsville was stymied by the Cottonmouths netminder Andrew Loewen, who stopped 33 shots during the victory. The solid play of Loewen will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.25.

Columbus pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 33 penalty minutes.

The Cottonmouths' goal total was higher than their season average. This season, Columbus averages 2.5 goals per contest. The Cottonmouths relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Jordan Braid, Sullivan and Sam Bowles took 18 of the team's 31 shots.

Columbus also got points from Matt Gingera, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Columbus were Bret Tyler, who had three and Tom Fitzpatrick and Chris Bailer, who each chipped in one.

The Havoc racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with five minors and three majors for 25 minutes in penalty time. Huntsville had been averaging 22.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Havoc had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just one goal on nine chances. Huntsville's defensemen bolstered the Havoc's offensive attack, as they bombarded Loewen with 14 shots. Huntsville's offense rang up 34 shots on Columbus' net.

The Havoc were led by Bill Baker, who took three shots.

The Cottonmouths registered one goal on five power play opportunities. Dan McWhinney made 26 saves for Huntsville on 31 shots.
