Wilson's hat trick boosts Hampton Roads over Potomac, 6-5

A hat trick by Jeremy Wilson was the highlight in Whalers' 6-5 win against the Potomac Patriots.

Wilson notched his first tally 10:24 into the first period. He then added goals at 14:13 into the first and at 1:13 into the second.

The Hampton Roads Whalers led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when Hampton Roads' Brandon Large's scored on the power play at 10:10 in the second period to put the Whalers up 5-2.

Hampton Roads could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 26 minutes in penalties during the game.

Hampton Roads additionally got points from Kyle Buchanan, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Michael Addison, who also registered one goal and two assists, and Large, who also had one goal and one assist. In addition, Hampton Roads received assists from Thomas Gallo, Trent Carter, and Nathan Kanter, who each chipped in one.

Potomac made the Whalers' goaltenders to work without much rest, launching 48 shots and forcing 43 saves. Christopher Diaz made 15 stops and Taylor Brost made one. The Patriots bested their season scoring average. This season, Potomac averages 2.0 goals per contest.

The Patriots were helped by Miles Miller, who grabbed two goals. Miller scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 11:11 into the second period to make the score 5-3 Hampton Roads. Potomac had gotten the advantage when Hampton Roads' Grant Phillips was sent off for cross checking. Jack Strycharz provided the assist. Miller's next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Hampton Roads with 7:45 left in the second period. The Patriots earned a power play opportunity when Wilson was put in the box for cross checking. Tyler Nolan assisted on the tally. Potomac also got points from Nolan, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Strycharz, who also tallied one goal and one assist, and Robert Stone, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Potomac were Micah Dabao and Nicholas Grose, who contributed two a piece.

The Whalers registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. Patrick Anderson took the loss and made nine saves before being replaced by Derek Guzik who made five saves. Potomac incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
