Missoula downs Gillette in overtime, 5-4 (OT)Campbell County Ice Arena Sat, Feb 16, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Missoula Maulers' Christian Manning scored 34 seconds into overtime to beat the Gillette Wild, 5-4 (OT). Joey Sundgren and Manning provided the spark for Missoula, combining for three goals and one assist. Sundgren registered two goals and one assist and Manning also added one goal. Gillette was unable to stop the Maulers from sending pucks towards the net, and Missoula eventually piled up 56 shots on goal. Missoula also got a goal from Zach Paisley as well. In addition, Missoula received assists from Cody Ogrin and Matt Chamberlain, who each chipped in one and Dylan Chase, Paigg Maul, and Will Stawinski, who contributed two a piece. The Wild forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and four majors for 54 minutes in penalty time. Gillette had been averaging 21.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Wild's offense rang up 40 shots on the Maulers' net. Gillette was helped by Tyler Johnson, who had two goals. Johnson scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 5:18 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Gillette. The Wild earned a power play opportunity when Viktor Steenson was put in the box for interference. Trent Dillinger provided the assist. Johnson's next tally on the power play made the score 4-3 Missoula with 3:00 left in the second period. Gillette had taken the advantage when Missoula's Jordan Wheatley got sent off for roughing. Steve Patafio picked up the assist. Tyler Cavan also scored for Gillette. Other players who recorded assists for Gillette were Matt Rose, who had one and Moco Willis and Taylor Motsinger, who contributed two a piece. Cody Janzen rejected 36 shots on goal for the Maulers. Missoula totaled 21 minutes in penalty time with eight minors and one major and went 1-for-8 on the power play. Nick Vittori recorded 51 saves for the Wild. Gillette registered two goals on six power play opportunities. The Wild ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Willis was ejected from the game.
