GAME RECAP

Wackerly, Billings blank Yellowstone, 3-0

Centennial Ice Garden    Sun, Feb 10, 2013

The Billings Bulls used a sparkling performance by Nic Wackerly to take down the Yellowstone Quake, as the netminder did not allow a goal in Billings' 3-0 shutout victory.

Yellowstone's power play was ineffective against the Bulls' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Billings forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. The Bulls had been averaging 24.0 minutes in penalties per game. Billings put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Quake to score on any of their eight power plays.

The Bulls were helped by Jarrett Stark, who tallied one goal. Stark scored 9:47 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Billings. Erik Schulte provided the assist. Billings also got a goal from Ivan Good as well. In addition, Billings received assists from Ging Martin, Trey Robillard, Stephen Thompson, Nick Rizzo, and John Vant, who contributed one a piece.

The Yellowstone penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and one major for 37 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game the Quake had been spending in the box. Yellowstone's offense operated below it season average. The Quake average 4.8 goals per game. Billings was unable to stop Yellowstone from sending pucks towards the net, and the Quake eventually piled up 40 shots on goal.

The Bulls' Wackerly stopped 40 shots out of the 40 that he faced. Billings registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Jared Schletty made 24 saves for Yellowstone on 27 shots. The Quake ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Brandon Busse was ejected from the game.
