Missoula falls to Yellowstone in overtime, 4-3 (OT)

The Yellowstone Quake's Michael Berens scored 1:36 into overtime to beat the Missoula Maulers, 4-3 (OT).

Yellowstone came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Quake was down 2-0 after a power play goal by Missoula's Dustin Pierce at 7:25 in the second period. Yellowstone knotted things up at 3-3 on a power play goal by Viktor Steenson at 19:07 in the third period.

The the Quake penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 11 minors and one major for 37 minutes in penalty time. Yellowstone had been averaging 20.0 minutes in penalties per game.

Sam Basich also scored for Yellowstone. More assists for Yellowstone came via Orri Haman, who had two and Tanner Fricke, George Splichal, Jimmy Tich, and Chris Andre, who each chipped in one.

The Maulers racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. Missoula surpassed its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game. The Maulers' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on eight Yellowstone power plays. Missoula kept the Quake's goalie busy throughout the game, and Jared Schletty made 38 saves on 41 shots.

The Maulers were led by Paigg Maul, who racked up one goal and two assists. Maul scored on the power play 5:03 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Missoula. Missoula had gained a power play chance when Berens was whistled for elbowing. Pierce assisted on the tally. Missoula also got points from Pierce, who also had one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Missoula were Dylan Chase, Joey Sundgren, and Will Stawinski, who contributed one a piece.

Yellowstone ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Andre was ejected from the game. Cody Janzen recorded 16 saves for the Maulers. Missoula registered three goals on 11 power play opportunities. For the Maulers, Brett Mathews was ejected from the game.
