Billings vanquishes Missoula in shootout, 5-4 (3-3 SO)

Dixon Whitehead scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Billings Bulls picked up the extra point in a 5-4 (3-3 SO) win over the Missoula Maulers.

The shootout featured 16 attempts between both teams. Missoula's shootout goals were scored by Brett Mathews, Anders Nord, and Viktor Steenson. Billings also got shootout goals from Erik Schulte and Luke Bing.

Nik Nasby and Jarrett Stark provided the spark for the Bulls, combining for four goals and one assist. Nasby had two goals and Stark also added two goals and one assist.

Billings forced the Maulers goalie Mckinlee Baum to work between the pipes, taking 51 shots. The Bulls outdid their season average for goals scored. Billings averages 2.8 goals per game. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

Billings additionally got points from Stark, who also registered two goals and one assist to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Billings were Adam Wikingsson, who had two and Stephen Thompson and Nick Rizzo, who contributed one a piece.

Missoula managed to stay out of the box better than usual, registering one minor for two minutes in penalty time. The Maulers ended up below its season average of 23.0 penalty minutes per game. Missoula's offense rang up 38 shots on the Bulls' net.

The Maulers were led by Paigg Maul, who had two goals and one assist. Maul scored the first of his two goals at 3:42 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Billings. Joey Sundgren assisted on the tally. Maul's next tally made the score 2-2 with 3:09 left in the second period. Missoula earned a power play opportunity when Wikingsson was put in the box for delay of game. Sundgren provided the assist. Zach Paisley also scored for Missoula. In addition, Missoula received assists from Niko Pukkila, Dustin Pierce, and Nord, who each chipped in one.

Nic Wackerly recorded 34 saves for Billings. The Bulls incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Mckinlee Baum made 46 saves for the Maulers on 50 shots. Missoula registered one goal on five power play opportunities.
